Subluxation Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Care for Subluxation in the Greater Orlando area.

Subluxation is the result of abnormal separation or misalignment of the vertebrae or spinal joints, which affects the nerve communication between the brain and the body. It a very common condition and usually occurs in women and older adults aged 40 or older, however it can occur in adults and children of all ages.

Causes of Subluxation

Subluxation occurs at any age and some of the causes are physical, toxins and stress. Subluxation can be caused by trauma due to physical impact and this can occur while playing sports or while sleeping in a bad position. It can also result from toxins due to poor diet because chemicals can throw your internal balance off and cause the muscles to contract. Stress is another possible cause of subluxation because tension can cause the muscles around the neck and upper back to tighten.

Conditions Resulting from Subluxation

Subluxation is believed to be one of the main causes of neck pain and back pain. Treating subluxations can help alleviate painful symptoms associated with numerous conditions, including:

  • Back pain
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Trauma
  • Scoliosis
  • Leg pain
  • Sports injuries
  • bursitis and tendonitis
  • spinal arthritis (spondylosis)
  • Whiplash

Symptoms of Subluxation

If the vertebral subluxation is causing nerve compression, this would result in neck and back pain. There are many possible causes of subluxation and symptoms can vary from person to person. The most common symptoms are:

  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Reduced range of motion or spinal mobility
  • Spinal muscle tightness, weakness or spasms
  • Pain, numbness or tingling sensation in the extremities

Back Pain: Neck and Low Back

Back pain is a debilitating condition that affects adults of all ages. People suffering from back pain may find difficulty performing everyday tasks like sitting, sleeping and engaging in physical activities. According to the American Chiropractic Association, an estimated 31 million American experience lower back pain at any given time.

Managing your back pain with chiropractic care can help alleviate back pain and restore quality of life. At Next Generation Chiropractic & Wellness, we help practice members in Orlando manage their back pain naturally with chiropractic care, avoiding invasive surgical procedures

Types of Back Pain

There are several types of back pain, but the most common types are acute low-back pain and chronic low-back pain.

Acute back pain

Practice members with acute low-back pain often improve on their own, through self-care, and stay active. If acute low back pain persist after four weeks, you can consider non-drug therapies, including Chiropractic manipulation.

Chronic back pain

Long-term use of pain medication usually does not improve functioning for practice members with chronic low-back pain. Natural therapies, including spinal manipulation prove more beneficial. Psychological and social factors also contribute to chronic low-back pain. Most practice members with chronic low-back pain will not become pain-free so treatment should be more focused on improving function and reducing pain.

Symptoms of Back Pain

With back pain, the connection to a physical source is not always evident. There are people showing no spinal abnormalities on their X-rays yet suffer from excruciating back pain.

  • Pain affects the back area and does not radiate to the leg
  • Difficulty standing, walking or sitting
  • Muscle spasms
  • Cramps
  • Pain is felt suddenly
  • Back is sore to the touch

Causes of Back Pain

The human spine is a complex structure of discs, joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles. There are several possible causes for back pain or discomfort. Most back pain sufferers don’t seek help to find out the cause of their back pain thinking that the pain will go away on its own and only get medical assistance if the pain intensifies and become unbearable.

Strained Muscles or Ligaments

Muscles, ligaments and tendons get strained when they are pulled or torn, which can damage fibers resulting in pain. This is more common among athletes and weekend warriors who engage in physically-demanding activities. However, you can still suffer from pulled muscle or ligaments while doing things, such as lifting, at home or at work.

Stress

When you are stressed, you become tensed, your blood pressure and heart rate rise and your muscles tighten. Constant stress causes your muscles to become sore and weak.

Vertebral Subluxation

Vertebral subluxation is a result of the spine in which alignment, movement integrity and physiological functions are compromised due to functional, structural, and/or pathological articular changes. In the lumbar spine, these usually occur at the transition between the lower spine and the sacrum. Because of the relationship between the spinal column, the spinal cord, and the spinal nerves, vertebral subluxations have the potential to impair proper nerve function. Herniated Disc

A herniated disc results when the rubbery cushions located between vertebrae or individual bones in the spine are ruptured. When one of these discs develops a crack in its hard outer wall, the inner disc material is pushed into the spinal canal. When this happens, the herniated disc irritates the nerves and causes pain, weakness, or numbness. Read more about Herniated Disc ›

Chronic Pain

At Next Generation Chiropractic & Wellness, our greater orlando pain management team understands the challenges facing practice members following chronic pain injuries. A whiplash injury or herniated disc can lead to recurring back pain, neck pain and headaches. For other practice members, chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia, can make their life unbearable at times. Our Chiropractor Dr. Hewett is here to help. Dr. Hewett’s purpose in life is to help as many people as possible through Chiropractic care, including our drug-free pain management solutions.

Neck & Back Pain Management – Get to the Root of the Problem

Traditional pain management relies on medication to mask the symptoms of chronic back pain. This medication interferes with the brain’s ability to process pain signals, giving practice members a temporary respite from pain. Unfortunately, once this medication wears off, the pain will return and may even feel worse than before. Many of our practice members worry about getting trapped in a cycle of medication and pain, which is harmful to the body’s health. Through Chiropractic care, Dr. Hewett can offer you a safe and effective alternative.

The spine is the body’s foundation; when it is misaligned, practice members experience pain. For example, a whiplash injury can affect the cervical spine’s alignment, placing pressure on nearby nerves and muscles, which in turn triggers pain. This is why many auto accident victims continue to suffer from neck pain and headaches months after the actual accident occurred. A herniated disc can cause similar problems. For example, if a herniated disc compresses the sciatic nerve, practice members may suffer from radiating and numbing pain sensations along the lower back, legs and buttocks. The key to managing this pain is to relieve pressure on the nerves. This is accomplished through Chiropractic adjustments.

Our gentle adjustments are a safe and effective technique for correcting spinal subluxations that trigger chronic pain after an accident injury. By restoring proper alignment to the spine, our Chiropractic adjustments support all aspects of our practice members’ health. Chiropractic adjustments are also beneficial for practice members who have a chronic pain condition, such as fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition characterized by recurring pain at tender points throughout the body. Practice memberss also struggle with chronic fatigue, headaches and migraines. While Chiropractic care cannot “cure” fibromyalgia, these adjustments are an effective way to maintain proper spinal alignment. Correct spinal alignment helps to alleviate many of the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. We may also recommend gentle exercises to improve circulation and range of mobility. This integrated approach to care is one reason why practice members choose our Greater Orlando pain management center.

At Next Generation Chiropractic & Wellness, our pain management clinic helps alleviate pain from within the body. We are proud to help bring you and your family an optimal state of health and wellness. With our natural pain management solutions, our Chiropractor will help you by faith and not by stress.

Disc Herniation

Treating Herniated Disc with Greater Orlando Chiropractor Dr Audra Hewett

An Overview of Herniated Disc

Herniated disc or bulging disc is a condition wherein a disc protrudes outside of the normal radius in the spine. A person suffering from this condition may not even know there is anything wrong until the bulging disc presses on a nerve in the spinal column and start causing excruciating pain. Depending on the location on the spine, herniated disc can cause pain and loss of range of motion. At Next Generation Chiropractic & Wellness in Greater Orlando, we understand just how painful and difficult it can be to suffer from this debilitating spine condition. Chiropractic care is one of the most popular alternative treatments used to treat herniated or bulging disc.

Symptoms of Herniated or Bulging Disc

Symptoms usually originate at the location of the bulging disc and could travel along the affected nerves. Below are some of the common symptoms:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Leg pain
  • Arm pain
  • Stiffness
  • Tenderness of the spine

Causes of Herniated Disc

Aging is one of the most common causes of a bulging or herniated disc. As we age, the shock-absorbing spinal discs lose its water content and elasticity, making them stiffer and more prone to damage or injury. Any minor trauma increases the pressure of the disc’s central core and puts a lot of stress stressing on the outer layer.

  • Repetitive movement like lifting, bending, standing or driving
  • Sports activities
  • Improper lifting techniques
  • Unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking
  • Physical trauma, such as a car accident or fall
  • Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Herniated Disc
  • Flexion distraction technique is a common Chiropractic adjustment used to stretch the spine and and isolate the affected area while flexing the spine with a gentle pumping rhythm. This helps move the herniated disc away from the nerve, reducing the pressure on the nerve root, and eventually relieving associated pain and inflammation.

Drug-Free Pain Relief
Pain relief drug medications can be extremely addictive. Chiropractic care offers relief from pain without the need for any addictive drugs or medications and heals the body from within and not just masking the pain.

Reduces Inflammation

An Overview of Neck and Back Pain

Acute and chronic back pain or neck pain cases almost always stem from the same root cause: subluxations of the vertebrae. Subluxations are misalignments in your spine. When the vertebrae are correctly lined up, they properly protect and cushion the spinal cord and the nerves that flow out from between the discs in the spine to the rest of your body. When everything is in alignment, you have no pain. When you suffer a car accident injury, a slip on a wet floor, when you lift something heavy the wrong way, or when you sleep on a sagging mattress or slouch at your computer, your posture is adversely affected. Vertebrae can be either slowly or quickly jostled out of position, but the result is the same: pain. Depending on which vertebrae are involved, you may suffer chronic neck pain or back pain, or both.

In addition to subluxations, there are a number of soft tissue problems involving the muscles, ligaments, tendons and discs that support the posture of the spine that can cause pain. Because everything is interconnected, it is important that any soft tissue strains, sprains and injuries will also be addressed. Another cause of acute back and neck pains can be damage to the discs that act as shock absorbers between your vertebrae. Ruptured or herniated discs fail to cushion the nerves so that out-of-place vertebrae pinch them even more painfully.

Dr. Hewett can help with all of these causes of pain. After a complete exam and medical history to discover the reason behind your pain, he can design a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan that addresses your needs for healing and pain relief. Usually, this involves very precise spinal adjustments to restore the correct alignment of the vertebrae. This frees up pinched nerves and leads to pain relief. In addition, he may recommend a course of therapeutic exercises and physiotherapy treatments to help address problems with muscles and other soft tissues so that they can be retrained and reconditioned to properly support good posture. To address ruptured or herniated discs, he may recommend a series of spinal decompression treatments.

Sciatica

An Overview of Sciatica

A common problem for people with herniated or bulging discs, sciatica is identified by pain that stems from compressed sciatic nerves. The pain usually starts in the lower back and travels down to one or both legs. The pain may vary in terms of frequency, severity, or it may be constant. The sciatic nerve travels through the lower back, hips and buttocks. When a herniated disc compresses the sciatic nerve, it causes the nerve to swell and pain arises in the lower body. Dr. Hewett at Next Generation Chiropractic & Wellness has seen the pain inflicted by sciatica on many practice members. The Chiropractic care he administers is a preventative and control tool for sciatica pain.

Sciatica Symptoms

When the sciatic nerve is compressed due to herniated or bulging disc, it leads to painful symptoms such as:

  • Pain concentrated on only one side of your lower body
  • Sharp shooting pain along the sciatic nerve
  • Numbness in your legs
  • Dull aches
  • Pain when standing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Anxiety
  • Panic attack symptoms

Chiropractic Care for Sciatica

Dr. Hewett often treats people with sciatica. Chiropractic adjustments will aim to realign the spine and take the pressure off of the sciatic nerve for pain relief. Once the pressure is off, the body can begin to heal itself from within. Dr. Hewett will tailor a Chiropractic care plan to suit your needs for long-lasting results. At Next Generation Chiropractic & Wellness, our goal is to improve our practice member’s health from the inside out.

Drug-Free Pain Relief

Pain relief drug medications can be extremely addictive. Chiropractic care offers relief from pain without the need for any addictive drugs or medications and heals the body from within and not just masking the pain.

Restores Range of Motion

Chiropractic adjustments can help mobilize your spine and restore range of motion. Dr. Hewett has the training to provide you with the highest level of chiropractic care to help you avoid long-term pain and promote natural healing.

Sports Medicine

    Spinal Manipulations and Techniques
    Joint or Extremity Manipulations

Dr. Hewett, your Greater Orlando Chiropractor, is highly trained in spinal and extremity manipulations and mobilizations, which can increase motion to the joints and decrease pain. Joint manipulation utilizes a quick but gentle maneuver to enable movement in joints with decreased range of motion, resulting in decreased pain. Joint mobilization is similar to spinal manipulation, but is used in different conditions and is effective at increasing motion in joints with limited range of motion.

Flexion Distraction Technique

The flexion-distraction technique is another unique lumbar traction technique available for Next Generation Chiropractic & Wellness practice members. A flexion distraction table is used to treat the lumbar and thoracic spine. The table moves side to side, up and down to provide traction, which decreases spasm in the surrounding soft tissues, mobilizes the spinal joints and addresses herniated disc. This technique decreases intradiscal pressure, resulting in hydration of herniated or degenerated disc.
